June 7, 2004Surgery is ScheduledBecause I am having a hysterectomy on Tuesday, I am taking a few weeks off. I've been pursuing alternatives for a year, and now, for me, this is the best decision. I also debated endlessly (with myself) about how much I wanted to share and when I wanted to share it. Should I just say I am taking time off for personal reasons? Or what about calling it a surgery, and leaving it at that? But there it is. I blurted it out. Sorry if this is "too much information." I certainly did not want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Sigh. Because I am working ahead, I expect that you will continue to receive regular newsletters from me ... and that in two or three weeks I'll be back in my computer chair, and feeling much better. I know what you must have been through . Do what the doctor says! I know someone who got lots of help and support from www.hystersisters.com. Posted by: Phil on June 30, 2004 6:51 AM I hope you are recovering quickly and managing to use your recovery time to treat yourself. It is good when ever anyone is open about medical issues that in the past people have felt wern't 'nice' to talk about - there would be no issue if it were, for example, knee surgery. Yet the old embaressments have led to people delaying or even not getting help which could have eased suffering or even saved lives. So - good on you for being open. Just think it might help someone to get help they have previously felt too awkward to mention. Posted by: andrea on June 11, 2004 2:01 PMDear Barbara Hope all went well and that you are feeling better every day. Three weeks seems a very short time you are allowing yourself ... should be more like six or seven. Thanks for sharing with us, both "business" and personal! Your site is great. Take care, think positively and heal quickly! Posted by: pat on June 11, 2004 1:36 PMGood Luck and rest up! I will be praying for you that the operation is a success. Never forget to say your prayers for what ever comes your way in life, good or bad. Remember before your surgery say a prayer or have someone say one with you before you have your operation and God will hear your prayers. Remember God gave us free will. God Bless. Shari Garland Posted by: Shari Garland on June 9, 2004 12:09 PMI think that telling us about your surgery personalizes your situation. Like the others above who wrote comments, my thoughts and prayers are with you. May you feel much better once this is over. Thank you for a great website. Mary Posted by: Mary Phillips on June 9, 2004 11:33 AMI just wanted to let you know that I will be thinking of you and that you will be in my prayers. It is with great sincerity that I believe that all will go well with your surgery. God Bless You Like so many others I think your emails are wonderful and I look forward to receiving them. I just had a TAH/BSO (2/24/04) so I'll be thinking of you. I don't regret a moment of getting mine done and I hope you will feel the same. Best of luck to you and be sure to follow the doctors instructions - DO NOT overdo it. How you take care of yourself now will determine how you feel for years! Check out http://www.HysterSisters.com - great website for Ladies in Waiting and Punctured Princesses! :-) Posted by: Deb on June 9, 2004 9:52 AMBarbara, I enjoy the Surfnetkids Newsletters. I look forward to each and everyone. At this time, however, be selfish and take care of yourself. Do not rush it. We will be waiting patiently for your complete recovery. My prayers are with you. Posted by: Connie on June 9, 2004 9:47 AMI hope the surgery went well and your recovery is smooth and free of complications. Best of luck! Evan (age 9) and I love the newsletter and look forward to it every week, even when it *doesn't* have something to do with ancient Egypt! (Ancient Rome is close enough.) Posted by: Janet Roberts on June 9, 2004 9:45 AMIf you find sitting tiring find a chair, like an adjustable lawn chair, that does not keep your middle at a right angle. A pillow under your knees makes sleeping easier. Good Luck! Posted by: Deb MacInnis on June 9, 2004 8:53 AMMy thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of "Passage" (great book, and I recommend it if you haven't already read it). Your site has proved to be very useful to me as a teacher and grandmother. I guess I took it (and you) for granted, and will miss it while you recover. Barbara: My surgery was a few years back. Can I suggest a helpful community on-line? HysterSisters at http://www.hystersisters.com/ is upbeat and helpful, has great information, and an on-line community. I loved their book and their Princess Pak for pampering you like a Princess. Good thoughts for you! Posted by: Patti on June 9, 2004 8:38 AMBarbara, Good luck with your surgery!! Been there and done that, so I know how it goes. My prayers are with you! Posted by: Bonnie on June 9, 2004 8:20 AMGood luck with your surgery, Barbara. We'll all be thinking of you. Posted by: Vikki on June 9, 2004 7:53 AMBest wishes for a healthy recovery. Do rest and relax it makes a world of difference. Barbara, thank you for such a wonderful letter. My daughter and I always look forward to it. We enjoy the stories very much. Don't feel bad about telling about your surgery. I belief that it is good to talk about things that hurt us or bottle us. I personally find relief when I talk about it. Be brave and take care of yourself. Our prayers are with you. Looking forward to have you back well and ready to keep us going, Mildred Posted by: Mildred Williams on June 9, 2004 7:21 AMBarbara, I hope by now you are feeling much better. Caroline Posted by: Caroline Shaw on June 9, 2004 7:20 AMGood luck with the surgery. I had this same surgery 10 years ago, after putting it off for a long time. My only regret was that I hadn't done it sooner. Take care, you will be in my thoughts. Posted by: Jackie on June 9, 2004 7:17 AMBest wishes from me and my family here in France, Barbara. Trudi Sabaj, Advanced Practice Nurse Barbara, my thoughts and prayers will be with you for a speedy recovery! Thank you for all you do to make the Internet a better place for children! Posted by: Mary Conyers on June 9, 2004 6:20 AMYour newsletter is like a phone call from a friend. I look forward to it each week and am so grateful my principal shared your site with me. As far as the 'surgery' goes, best of luck. You will not be sorry (the voice of experience speaking). Do exactly as the medical team tells you during recovery and all will go well. As a school nurse I could not resist putting that last comment in. Keep up the good work. Thank you! Posted by: Barbara Mckee on June 9, 2004 6:18 AMGood luck on your surgery. Take care and rest and don't overdo it. Thanks for the wonderful newsletter you produce. It has been invaluable to us in teaching our child things we probably wouldn't have otherwise pursued.
